Europe sizzles in scorching temperatures as heat wave spreads across continent

Spain, which is dealing with the aftermath of a wildfire that tore through 10,000 acres of forest in the country’s north-east on Friday, is bracing for temperatures of up to 42 degrees, according to its national meteorological body AEMET. The country is still affected by a “mass of tropical wind coming from Africa’a mass of tropical wind coming from Africa,” the agency said.

And the UK saw its hottest day of the year by some distance, with the mercury rising to 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 Fahrenheit) and threatening the country’s hottest-ever June mark of 35.6 degrees, set in 1976.

The hot weather is hitting sporting events across Europe, including the
first-ever Major League Baseball game to be played in London. In a sign of how unusual the June heat wave is, organizers at Lord’s Cricket Ground in the city even allowed spectators at the World Cup match between Australia and New Zealand to
remove their jackets at the pavilion.

At Glastonbury, revelers ditched the mud-proof boots usually associated with Britain’s most famous music festival — and showers at the event were closed to preserve water at the Worthy Farm site.

The continent has been baking in the heat all week, with cities springing into action to prevent it from turning fatal.

French authorities have taken a number of radical steps this week to prevent a repeat of the tragic consequences of the 2003 heat wave that left around 14,000 people dead. Around 4,000 schools were closed in the country on Friday and the opening hours of parks and public swimming pools have been extended.

Paris activated its heat emergency plan last weekend, put together in the aftermath of the 2003 heat wave. Cooling rooms were opened in some municipal buildings and mist showers were installed in the streets in the city, which is seeing temperatures of over 35 degrees on Saturday.

Firefighters put out hot spots on Saturday after a brushfire hit the south on France.Firefighters put out hot spots on Saturday after a brushfire hit the south on France.

Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic all recorded their highest-ever June temperatures during the week.

And the heat is set to move east in the coming days, with countries including Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary preparing for marks in the mid-30s at the start of next week.

Climate scientists have warned that heat waves such as this one are becoming more frequent and increasingly severe because of the climate crisis. Météo-France, the country’s meteorological body, said the frequency of such events is expected to double by 2050.

Trump embraces dictators and despots in deal-making G20 summit

On Friday and Saturday here, Trump sat for talks with men accused of masterminding election fraud and a grisly murder. He worked to strike a trade deal with the President of a nation imprisoning a million religious minorities in remote camps. And
he tweeted an optimistic “meet you there!” message to the despot who’s assassinated underlings with anti-aircraft guns.
Trump’s penchant for dictators has always been a pronounced aspect of his foreign policy, but in Japan he appeared to throw aside attempts at masking it. If there is a Trump foreign policy doctrine — and there is no consensus among experts and analysts that there is — it would most likely center on the
pursuit of deals, no matter the dealmakers.
Trump's G20 orbits around Xi, Putin and other world leadersTrump's G20 orbits around Xi, Putin and other world leaders
“It’s about relationship. Otherwise, you end up in very bad wars and lots of problems,” Trump explained during a breakfast with the powerful Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was named last week by the United Nations as a probable orchestrator of the murder and dismemberment of
Jamal Khashoggi, a dissident journalist who lived in the United States.

With tiny jars of strawberry jam and vases of yellow roses on the table, Trump brushed off a question on whether he would raise Khashoggi’s murder, which was carried out using a bone saw.

“Uh,” Trump said, as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sat frowning next to him, “thank you very much.”

In Trump’s view, it’s the bad guys who can make the deals worth making, not necessarily the traditional US allies who are bound by legislatures and political concerns that would hamper their ability to negotiate.

With Prince Mohammed, Trump hopes to secure new commitments for purchases of military equipment. And the Middle East peace plan devised by his
son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner depends on financial contributions from the wealthy Gulf monarchies to the Palestinians, a gambit that has drawn deep skepticism.
Those efforts, more than the advancement of human rights or justice for a gruesome murder, are Trump’s stated goals. The
US President said later he had raised the Khashoggi matter in private with Prince Mohammed, describing himself as “extremely angry.”
Trump says he is 'extremely angry' about Khashoggi murder, but defends MBS relationshipTrump says he is 'extremely angry' about Khashoggi murder, but defends MBS relationship

But he defended himself against the notion he only cozies up toward dictators.

“I get along with a lot of people,” he said. “I also get along with people who would be perceived as being very nice.”

Trump’s worldview isn’t new

The realpolitik nature of Trump’s worldview is not new, but in Japan it came into its sharpest relief as the President darted from meeting to meeting with accused murder masterminds, avowed authoritarians and former spies.

Trump hoped to find further realization of his view that only interpersonal skills can resolve the global disputes of the day in his
closely watched trade talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Beforehand, Trump himself insisted on a delay to a planned speech by Vice President Mike Pence pegged to the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which was expected to call out China’s troubling human rights and religious freedom record. He was concerned the message might appear discordant with his trade efforts, according to a person familiar with the decision.

Clearing any obstacles toward a trade understanding, Trump found himself with an agreement, albeit one that looked awfully familiar to the understanding he reached with Xi seven months ago, when the two sides agreed to hold off on tariffs as talks proceeded.

Asked after the meeting how it went, the hawkish trade adviser Peter Navarro — an ardent advocate for tariffs who’s irritated more moderate members of Trump’s team — just gave a shrug with both hands.

In Japan, Trump met briefly with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who he deemed a “fantastic woman.” And he was frequently approached by French President Emmanuel Macron for some intense words, though they did not meet formally.

Instead, Trump’s highest-profile meetings were reserved for leaders who have tended toward authoritarianism.

A date with Kim?

Trump tweets Kim Jong Un an invitation to 'shake his hand' at DMZTrump tweets Kim Jong Un an invitation to 'shake his hand' at DMZ
It was due to continue at his next stop in Seoul, when
Trump is hoping to meet North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un for a handshake at the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

“I just thought of it this morning,” Trump said of his tweet, framing the message to Kim like an email to some distant cousin who lives in a city he’s passing through. “We’ll be at the area.”

Whether it was as spontaneous as Trump made it out to be is doubtful; he told reporters from The Hill newspaper earlier in the week he planned a visit to the DMZ but the White House asked the outlet to delay publication citing security concerns.

Planned or not, the potential encounter with Kim comes without the back-and-forth negotiations that preceded Trump’s earlier two summits with the leader, both of which have so far failed to rid the country of its nuclear weapons. In the end, the Singapore and Hanoi summits were more about friendship than hard-fought dealmaking anyway, and the DMZ handshake doesn’t appear any different.

Trump, who has sought to imbue his diplomatic efforts with drama and intrigue, was eager to assess the reaction in Osaka.

“Have you seen my tweet?” Trump asked South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the leaders’ coffee lounge, according to Moon’s office. When he responded affirmatively, Trump gave a thumbs up.

With other leaders, Trump employed hyperbolic congratulations for those who’d recently won elections — just as some of his own early foreign-courters used outsized compliments of his upset victory in their efforts to woo him.

“We’re with a gentleman who had one of the greatest election wins anywhere in the world,” Trump said next to Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right President who’s adopted Trump’s populist (and, in Bolsonaro’s case, misogynistic and homophobic) rhetoric.

“You did indeed have a landslide election. That was a great election,” Trump told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, praising him for “pulling everybody together” despite accusations he’s given more power to a Hindu majority at the expense of Muslims and other minorities.

Electioneering is never far from Trump’s mind, particularly as he nears his own reelection battle. He arrived in Japan pledging to remain focused on the work at hand — an intentional attempt to project a presidential air while his rivals were squabbling among themselves back home.

Those assurances didn’t last long;
Trump deemed the first night of the Democratic debates “BORING!” in a tweet and later told Germany’s Merkel that, after passing by a television set in the G20 airing the event, he wasn’t impressed. How or why a television was airing a US political debate backstage at the G20 isn’t clear; it’s seems more likely that Trump’s aides arranged for the broadcast to sate his interest in his rivals.

He couldn’t offer election congratulations to the Saudi Crown Prince, who achieved his powerful post through birth and will never face an election. But he found room to praise him nonetheless for the reforms that once captured the world’s attention.

“I think especially what you’ve done for women — I’m seeing what’s happening; it’s like a revolution in a very positive way,” Trump said.

While some new rights for Saudi women have been secured, including the ability of women to obtain drivers’ licenses, strict guardianship laws still restrict the rights of women in the country. Ivanka Trump, the President’s daughter and senior adviser, seemed more pointed when she provided notice during a session on women’s empowerment that those issues would be on the agenda even with repressive regimes.

“The United States looks forward to working with all of those here today, including Saudi Arabia which will be hosting the next G20 presidency, to advance these important and critical goals,” she said.

Trump says trade talks back on track after meeting Chinas Xi

“We’re right back on track. We’ll see what happens,” Trump said after the talks wrapped. The leaders met for more than an hour.

Later, Trump told reporters he would hold off — for now — on imposing new tariffs that he’d threatened if an agreement couldn’t be reached, though said existing duties would remain.

“I promised that for at least the time being we’re not going to be lifting tariffs on China. We won’t be adding an additional tremendous amount — we have $350 billion left that could be tariffed, taxed — we’re not going to be doing that,” Trump told reporters at his closing G20 news conference in Japan.

Trump said the US would be working “where we left off” in trade talks with China.

“We had a great meeting and we will be continuing to negotiate,” Trump said.

Heading into the meeting, it was uncertain how much progress the two men could make on easing the withering trade war that’s been boiling for months. Optimistic analysts believed there were signals the tensions could ease. But others said it was more likely the anxiety-inducing, growth-slowing slog would continue apace.

US officials characterized the session as an opportunity for both to gain a better understanding of each leaders’ position as they work to resolve a dispute that carries immense political risk for both men.

As they sat for the talks at a long rectangular table, Trump conveyed optimism a historic trade accord could be reached — but didn’t say when or how.

“This can be a very productive meeting and I think we can go on to do something that will be truly monumental,” Trump said.

“We’ve had an excellent relationship but we want to do something that will even it up with respect to trade,” Trump added later.

For his part, Xi recalled the 1970s-era ping-pong diplomacy between the two countries, using the reference to illustrate how a “small ball played a big role” in establishing diplomatic ties between Beijing and Washington.

“One basic fact remains unchanged,” Xi said. “China and the United States both benefit from cooperation and lose in a confrontation. “

Earlier in the day, Trump said he had made progress with Xi during pull-aside discussions in Japan ahead of their formal sit-down.

“I was with him last night. A lot was accomplished, actually, last night,” Trump said during a breakfast meeting in Osaka. World leaders had met for dinner on Friday evening at Osaka Castle, which is where Trump spoke with Xi.

“The relationship is very good with China. As to whether or not we can make a deal, time will tell,” Trump said.

The talks, which have been anticipated for weeks,
come after trade negotiations broke down in May. The US said China backed out of previously made commitments to enact certain reforms in exchange for tariff relief.

Trump has deemed himself the only person able to bring the dispute to a resolution through face-to-face talks with Xi. There has been little communication until recently as negotiators from both sides resumed discussions ahead of the leaders’ meeting.

US and Chinese trade teams met Friday in Osaka, according to a person familiar with the meeting. Participants included US Trade Rep. Robert Lighthizer, US Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He.

The US-China trade dispute has clouded the G20 summit here, where leaders are expressing concern over a global economic slowdown and the myriad trade feuds Trump has escalated around the globe.

Speaking a day before meeting Xi, Trump previewed a useful meeting with his Chinese counterpart but gave little away in terms of possible outcomes.

“At a minimum it will be productive. We’ll see what happens and what comes out of it,” Trump said. “It will be a very exciting day, I’m sure.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s advisers say the talks are occurring without preconditions and that all options — including either a trade truce or the application of new tariffs — are potential outcomes. Trump has said he’s willing to slap tariffs on $300 billion in Chinese goods on top of the duties he’s already applied, but aides have suggested a decision to delay the new round of tariffs is a potential result of Saturday’s talks.

No commitments ahead of talks

Trump on Friday denied that he’d made any commitments to hold off on new tariffs as a condition for meeting Xi, a sentiment echoed by his economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Fox News earlier in the day.

“No there are no preconditions,” Kudlow said.

This week, Mnuchin said the two sides were 90% of the way to an agreement when the talks broke down in May, but the remaining 10% has proved difficult for negotiators to break through.

US officials said this week there has been little indication over the past weeks that China is willing to cede to American demands they reform their economy. These people, who are close to the discussions, said Trump and Xi would need to essentially re-establish the progress they made before talks broke down in Washington in May.

Instead, the officials say a likelier outcome of Saturday’s meeting is a truce of sorts that will avoid new tariffs while establishing a timeline for renewed talks. That’s similar to the result of Trump’s last sit-down with Xi, held in December in Buenos Aires. Back then, Trump agreed to delay tariffs as the two sides worked to strike a deal.

Complicating matters are the Trump administration’s scaled-up efforts to restrict Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant, from building 5G networks around the world, which Washington fears could be used by the Chinese government for spying.

Speaking at a session devoted to global data governance on Friday, the two men made veiled references to the ongoing dispute.

“We must also ensure the resilience and security of our 5G networks. This is essential to our shared safety and prosperity,” Trump said in his opening remarks at the summit of world leaders. Speaking ahead of Trump, Xi said, “We cannot develop ourselves behind closed doors nor shall we cause disruptions to the market.”

It’s expected Huawei will arise during the two leaders’ meeting.

A trio of high-profile meetings

The talks with Xi are one of three high-profile meetings Trump will convene in Japan on Saturday.

He discussed tensions with Iran over breakfast with the powerful Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has been accused of masterminding the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Human rights activities have called on the White House to enact new sanctions on Prince Mohammed, but Trump has signaled he’s moved on from the incident.

On Friday, Trump was seen in easy conversation with the Saudi royal as leaders at the G20 lined up for a family photo. At one point, Trump rested his hand on Prince Mohammed’s back.

At the start of their breakfast, Trump lavished praise on the prince.

“It’s like a revolution in a very positive way,” Trump said, seated across from Mohammed at a hotel in Osaka. Trump hailed the prince’s steps toward “opening up Saudi Arabia,” including for women.

“You’ve done really a spectacular job,” Trump said.

Asked directly and audibly whether he would raise the issue of Khashoggi, Trump declined to respond.

“Thank you very much,” he said.

Instead, Trump hailed Saudi Arabia’s purchase of American military equipment.

Later,
Trump met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan amid a dispute between the two countries over Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system.

US officials have warned Turkey that it would not be allowed to buy the F-35 stealth jet if it goes ahead with the missile system purchase because the US believes the Russian system is incompatible with the F-35 jet — and has argued that Moscow could use it to gather intelligence on the aircraft.

Congress has threatened to impose sanctions in response, but Erdoğan said recently he doesn’t believe Trump will move forward with the sanctions because of their warm relationship.

Trump suggested as much Saturday, saying alongside Erdoğan the situation was “complicated” but that he was “looking at different solutions.”

Photo reveals awkward first meeting between Theresa May and Vladimir Putin since Salisbury poisoning

The leaders’ strained relationship appeared to be on display in photographs of their handshake at the start of the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the annual two-day G20 summit in Osaka.

It is the first time both May and Putin have met since the poisoning incident in March 2018, when former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were found slumped on a bench in the
English city of Salisbury after being exposed to Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent.

Months later, British citizen Dawn Sturgess died after accidentally being exposed to the same substance. The UK government blamed the poisonings on Russian intelligence officers, which Moscow has denied.

Relations between the nations have been strained since and Friday’s meeting showed little sign of an upcoming thaw.

The Prime Minister, who is due to step down in July, told Putin that any attempt to rekindle relations would be put on hold until “Russia stops the irresponsible and destabilizing activity” such as “hostile interventions in other countries, disinformation and cyber attacks,” a Downing Street spokesperson said.

‘Truly despicable act’

May told Putin that using Novichok was “part of a wider pattern of unacceptable behavior and was a truly despicable act that led to the death of a British citizen,” the spokesperson said.

“She said that this behavior could never be repeated and that the UK wants to see the two individuals responsible brought to justice.”

May also “unequivocally” defended liberal democracy, in a pointed reference to Putin’s comments in an interview with the
Financial Times (FT), where he said the “liberal idea” had “outlived its purpose.”

“This spy story, as we say, it is not worth five kopecks. Or even five pounds, for that matter,” Putin told the FT.

On Friday, May also called for the protection of “human rights and equality of all groups, including LGBT people,” the spokesperson added.

The meeting between the two leaders is considered very important to the Kremlin, Russian state news agency RIA-Novosti quoted Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov as saying before the pair met.

Moscow has repeatedly asked for the diplomatic fences to be mended. “There’s a need to finally turn this page,” Putin said earlier in June, according to Agence France-Presse news agency.

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have just wrapped up a closed-door meeting, where they discussed the ongoing US-China trade war.

But let’s go back to basics. Here’s what you need to know:

What is the trade war?

The trade war encompasses a series of escalating tit-for-tat trade tariffs between the US and China. It started last June, when Trump announced tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods. Days later, Xi retaliated with tariffs on $34 billion worth of US imports.

The trade war has now been going on for a year. Hundreds of billions of dollars in US and Chinese exports are now facing heavy tariffs on both sides of the Pacific.

What does this mean for the public?

The tariffs mean American products are more expensive for Chinese importers — and so soybean, corn, and wheat farmers in the US have taken a severe blow. Big US companies and industry trade associations, like Walmart and Costco, have also suffered.

When will it end?

No one is quite sure. The trade talks have stalled since May, and even though today’s meeting signals something of a tentative restart in negotiations, US officials say a final deal isn’t expected this week.

Instead, what’s more likely is a truce of sorts that will avoid new tariffs while establishing a timeline for renewed talks.

Last known images of missing Utah college student released by Salt Lake City police

In the still shots snatched from Salt Lake City International Airport videotape, Lueck is seen wearing a black backpack and carrying a stylish handbag as she exits the airport’s departure area sometime after 2 a.m. on Monday, June 17. Lueck had arrived at the airport after attending a family funeral in California. She texted her mother at 1 a.m. Monday when she landed in Salt Lake City, according to
CNN affiliate KSTU.

Another grainy photo shows her casually rolling her luggage past the baggage carousel.

That was moments before she took a Lyft to
Hatch Park in North Salt Lake City, according to police. The Lyft driver drove off and picked up other riders. Lueck has not been seen or heard from since.

“Mackenzie was met at Hatch Park by an individual in a vehicle. The Lyft driver left Mackenzie at the park with that person and stated that Mackenzie did not appear to be in any type of distress,” Salt Lake Assistant Police Chief Tim Doubt told reporters on Monday. Police cannot confirm the make or model of the car and do not know the identity of the person Lueck met — or even if that person is a man or a woman, Doubt said.

Lyft itself confirmed her route showed no irregularities and ended at the destination she entered. The driver continued providing rides immediately after the ride ended, the company said. “We are actively assisting law enforcement with their investigation,” Lyft stated on Saturday.

Lueck missed a flight to Los Angeles on the morning of June 23 and she also missed a midterm exam, according to police.

Friend and sorority sister Ashley Fine told
CNN affiliate KSL that Lueck is “extremely dedicated. She would never miss her midterms or anything like that.”

Fine said Lueck lives with roommates near Trolley Square but noted that she has not been in touch with them. “I don’t know why she would be going (to North Salt Lake) around 2 a.m. It’s just very, very suspicious and dangerous,” Fine said.

Lueck’s phone has not been on or located since June 17, police said. While no evidence of harm has been found, Doubt said “because of the circumstances of the case, we want to make sure that she is all right.”

“Mackenzie, we are asking you to please reach out to either the Salt Lake City police department or a law enforcement agency where you are at. We want to make sure you are safe and we will respect your wishes,” said Doubt, who noted that sometimes missing people don’t want to be reached.

Police have set up a tip line and ask that anyone with information call 801-799-4420.

Megan Rapinoe, USA Beat France, Advance to 2019 Womens World Cup Semi-Finals

Defending champions the United States have reached the semi-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, beating hosts France 2-1 on Friday.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice before Wendie Renard got one back for Les Bleues as the U.S. advanced to a last-four tie against England.

France conceded an opening goal on home soil for the first time in 2019 when Rapinoe arrowed a free-kick past Sarah Bouhaddi in the fifth minute.

While it was a fine strike, Bouhaddi might have got across to it quicker:

The U.S. were causing plenty of problems early on by going direct. Rapinoe and the rest were taking on shots whenever they found space in and around the box, while the pace of Alex Morgan had Renard and the France defence on their heels.

French nerves soon settled, though, once the U.S. failed to add to their lead. The majority of the opening half saw Les Bleues do the running, promoting a stubborn rearguard action from the visitors.

In particular, full-back Crystal Dunn was in exceptional form to subdue Kadidiatou Diani. The lively winger had been France’s biggest threat at these finals, but Dunn was tracking her movement well and not falling for any of her tricks.

France had been stunned by a quick goal in the opening half and nearly fell victim to the same thing as the sound of the whistle that signalled the restart still echoed in the air:

Sam Mewis’ involvement in the move summed up her industry and ingenuity throughout the game. The 26-year-old was the driving force for her team, knitting together the midfield and forward lines with breaks from deep.

France needed to show similar endeavour, and it was Amandine Henry who showed more than most. She began to roam beyond midfield and proved her threat with shots from the edge of the area.

Henry needed more help from those ahead of her, but with Diani still struggling, Eugenie Le Sommer shot into the side netting on the turn.

Despite the miss, France were piling on the pressure and making the U.S. look uncharacteristically shaky. It was against the run of play then when Rapinoe made it 2-0 on 65 minutes, finishing well after being found by a smart pull-back from the impressive Tobin Heath.

Even after seeing the deficit doubled, Les Bleues didn’t give up hope. A necessary change saw Delphine Cascarino come off the bench to try her luck against Dunn, and the Lyon forward immediately started finding some joy.

Cascarino helped France keep the pressure on, and the reward came when Renard made amends for more than a few defensive lapses by heading in from a free-kick.

France thought they were owed a penalty soon after when Kelley O’Hara appeared to block an Amel Majri cross with her hand. Nothing was given despite furious appeals from the home side.

Ultimately, the U.S. had taught France a painful lesson in the value of clinical efficiency in front of goal.

Commentators: Who won the 2nd Democratic debate? – CNN

Listen closely to California Sen. Kamala Harris, and she’ll tell you exactly what the Democrats are thinking: we’re a part of the government, and we’re here to help (whether you want it or not).

First, she admonished her fellow candidates to stop fighting.

“Hey guys…America does not want to witness a food fight. They want to know how we’re going to put food on their table,” she scolded early on.

Then came her big moment to prosecute the front runner, Joe Biden. Her ambush on his position on busing should have been predictable for Biden, but he clearly wasn’t ready and had no plan to counterattack Harris on her controversial record as California’s attorney general (which would have been the smart play).

But her closing caught my attention, as it recalled a sentiment she made in her food fight quip – the government is going to take care of you.

“I have what I call a 3 a.m. agenda, that is about everything from what we need to do to deliver health care to how you will be able to pay the bills by the end of the month.”

She started with talking about the government putting food on your table and ended with talking about the government paying your bills.

There was great honesty in those lines – I would argue that Democrats view government as a welfare state, not as a vehicle to create an economic environment where families can provide for themselves. This fundamental difference in the two parties will be on display in 2020. Democrats have sweeping government solutions for everything, and some candidates already admitted they will raise taxes to pay for it.

On Wednesday, Julian Castro said his health care plan would cover abortions for transgender people, and tonight, every Democrat on stage agreed that his or her health care plan would cover undocumented immigrants. These two moments sent a strong message to independent voters in swing states, and I am not sure Democrats are going to like how it was received.

Harris and the rest of her cohorts gave passionate defenses of a massive expansion of the federal government, even covering people who aren’t citizens. This sentiment will make up the core of the Republican attack over the next year and a half – they will raise your taxes to pay for stuff for other people. Period.

Biden throws own campaign into turmoil after searing Harris attack

“My time is up,” he said, meaning to cut short one of his own answers but instead drawing attention to a question that haunts his campaign: Has his generation’s time come and gone?

Harris’ assault was breathtaking, appeared planned ahead of time and exposed a willingness to attack she had not previously shown in a campaign that started strong but has slumbered ever since.

The immediate impressions left after a debate are often not how things appear a few days later. So it may be that Biden’s bad night does not end up being as damaging as it first appeared.

It’s even possible that some voters might have been offended at the audacity of the attack by Harris on a man who has been a devoted servant of the Democratic Party for decades.

And Biden — who served as vice president to the nation’s first black President,
Barack Obama — enjoys strong support among African American voters, a crucial Democratic constituency.

But it was easily the most compelling and memorable moment of the young 2020 campaign so far and leaves the ex-vice president confronting deeply uncomfortable questions about his hopes.

Harris confronts Biden over past efforts to block busing: 'That little girl was me'Harris confronts Biden over past efforts to block busing: 'That little girl was me'

Biden, on the ropes as he’s rarely been in half a century of public life, snapped his head towards Harris in disbelief as she said, “Vice President Biden, I do not believe you are a racist…”

The California senator was seizing on a recent comment by Biden in which he highlighted his work with
segregationist senators in the 1970s to show he could work with people he disagreed with.

Beloved by many Democrats after a lifetime overcoming personal tragedies, Biden appeared shocked and deeply hurt to be faulted on civil rights, an issue on which he’s fought for decades.

His struggle to respond effectively to Harris – and his decision to invoke a states’ rights argument with all its troubling racial connotations, only compounded the damage.

Biden has been trying to dispel the impression that he’s been left behind by a young and diverse party that’s changed under him.

As the frontrunner he was always going to be the biggest target — and he took fire from other rivals, including Rep.
Eric Swalwell of California.

Not all of his performance was as bad as his exchange with Harris. But debates are won and lost in the breakout moments that can come to define a candidacy.

New questions on Biden’s hopes

Biden ended the night besieged by questions over whether he is sufficiently nimble and energetic to triumph in the grueling struggle to win the Democratic nomination.

His wobbly performance will also renew doubts about his claim that he’s the strongest campaigner to take on Trump in November 2020.

The President, who has a merciless nose for political weakness, may have spotted Biden’s vulnerability earlier than anyone.

He’s spent recent weeks slamming Biden as “Sleepy” and making dark remarks about the mental state of a rival his aides say concerns Trump over his appeal in rust-belt states.

There’s little doubt that Biden has the experience required of a President, and as a former vice president, he knows exactly the burdens that come with the Oval Office entail.

Swalwell urges Biden to 'pass the torch,' Biden says 'I'm still holding onto that torch'Swalwell urges Biden to 'pass the torch,' Biden says 'I'm still holding onto that torch'

But inevitably, there will now be more questions among Democrats about the wisdom of nominating someone who would be the oldest President ever elected.

“I think age is a very legitimate issue,” said David Axelrod, who saw the toll the office of the President can exact when he was a senior adviser to the Obama administration.

“This is the hardest job on the planet. And (it is) sensible to ask the question whether people who are nearing 80 years old when they enter office are prepared for it.”

“That’s why tests like this debate are important,” Axelrod, now a CNN political commentator said.

Biden can look to history for comeback hints

While it was a bad night for Biden, it may not be terminal for his hopes of fulfilling his lifetime dream to be President.

He’s not the first veteran politician to take a hammering in a debate. And he may be simply out of practice. He’s not faced comparable stakes since his 2012 debate showdown with GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan — which he won handily.

In his previous presidential campaign in 2008, Biden was outsider throwing bombs at the frontrunners. Now the roles are reversed. And he clearly wasn’t ready for the intensity of the fight.

In many ways, Biden performed like his old boss, Obama, who was roughed up by Mitt Romney, as presidents often are in their first reelection debate. His performance also recalled President Ronald Reagan, who appeared old and out of touch in his first debate against Democrat Walter Mondale in the 1984 election.

Each of those Presidents licked their wounds and bounced back, and won reelection. Biden now faces a similar assignment to get his campaign back on track in the next debate, to be hosted by CNN at the end of next month.

He will need to substantially raise his game. He was a shadow of the witty, vibrant politician who fired off zingers in his debates under intense scrutiny earlier in the 21st century.

To the victor, go the spoils

Harris’s strong performance in Miami immediately established her as a potential rising star of the 2020 campaign. She joins Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren who was praised for her performance in the first of the debate double headers on Wednesday.

Early debates are often not decisive in selecting a party nominee and questions remains about Harris’ staying power.

In a CNN town hall earlier in the campaign, for instance, she stumbled on health care, and has adopted confusing positions on “Medicare-for-All” — perhaps the central issue in the Democratic race.

She will now face all the scrutiny that comes with a rising campaign.

But it was the political instincts she showed in turning to Biden and challenging his past positions on race that will mean this debate may be remembered for years to come.

She rebuked Biden for his recent comments about segregationist senators and said she had been personally hurt by his position on integrating schools in the 1970s.

“There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bussed to school every day,” Harris said.

“And that little girl was me.”

Biden hits back with prosecutor jab

Biden, monetarily stunned, protested, rightly that he had a strong record on civil rights – and said local authorities, not Washington, where he was serving as a senator, took decisions that affected Harris.

As she tried to cross-examine him, Biden threw a jab of his own saying, “I was a public defender. I didn’t become a prosecutor,” in a reference to Harris’s former job sending people to jail.

“I’ve also argued very strongly that we, in fact, deal with the notion of denying people access to the ballot box,” Biden added.

“I agree that everybody once they — anyway, my time is up. I’m sorry,” Biden said, trailing off.

Harris was not the only candidate to try to grab a headline by attacking Biden and emphasizing the generational gap.

Swalwell said in a CNN interview earlier Thursday that Biden’s ideas were “staler than Donald Trump’s.”

And on the debate stage, he added, “I was 6 years old when a presidential candidate came to the California Democratic convention and said it’s time to pass the torch to a new generation of Americans. That candidate was then-Sen. Joe Biden.”

“He was right when he said that 32 years ago. He is still right today.”

Biden didn’t seem too put off by his 38-year-old colleague’s impudence, replying “I’m holding onto that torch. I want to make that clear,” he said.

Race in the race: What Kamala Harris identity brings to 2020

No figure looms larger over the 2020 Democratic primary race than President Donald Trump.

Instead, the first woman of color to represent California in the US Senate talked about truth.

The biracial daughter of immigrants talked fighting transnational gangs (i.e. MS-13) — and how “medieval” vanity projects won’t stop them.

The first female California attorney general talked about fighting against the big banks that prey on average Americans.

Harris — for both demographic and ideological reasons — is an inherent contrast to Trump. Her life story belies Trump’s talking points around immigration.

And though there are challenges posed by being a black woman running for the highest office in the land, it also means she is doing something entirely brand-new — something guaranteed to excite an already animated Democratic voter base.

Here are four ways identity are and will be key parts of Kamala Harris’ 2020 bid:

Is she seen as African-American?

Kamala Harris' secret weapon: The sisters of AKAKamala Harris' secret weapon: The sisters of AKA

Harris was recently asked about her identity, and how she describes herself:

Reporter: You’re an African-American woman, but you’re also Indian-American.

Harris: Indeed!

Reporter: How do you describe yourself?

Harris: Did you read my book? How do I describe myself? I describe myself as a proud American. That’s how I describe myself.

In her book, Harris also describes herself as a black woman, an identity nurtured by her mother, an Indian immigrant:

My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters. She knew that her adopted homeland would see Maya and me as black girls, and she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud black women.

Even with that paragraph in the opening pages of her book, the question of Harris blackness, or more specifically, how black she is, or even, what kind of black person she is, persists.

Her presidential rollout was steeped in blackness: Harris announced on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, borrowed from Shirley Chisolm’s color scheme in her logo and held her first post-announcement news conference at her alma mater, Howard University.

The question of her blackness — how black is she (Is she too black? Not black enough?) — won’t go away. It will be a subtext by which black, and maybe more importantly, white voters see her.

Yes, there are similarities with their biographies. Both have immigrant roots, biracial backgrounds, law-school degrees and short stints in the Senate.

And Obama quite notably also struggle with how to address race throughout his bid and his presidency.

But anyone looking for Obama’s rhetorical gifts in Harris, will be disappointed. Her comfort level on the big stage is not soaring oratory. She is more prosecutor — laying out a case, speaking conversationally, very few big crescendos. To her credit, she has gotten better. Flashback to her flat and stilted 2012 speech at the Democratic National Committee convention and you will see a big difference.

And she certainly has the potential to benefit from Obama’s successful candidacy — many voters have twice proven comfortable voting for black president.

Harris has called herself a progressive prosecutor, while others have called her a prosecutor with a heart. Neither term will answer the criticisms she is going to get from progressives on her record in California.

In a race that will likely be determined by margins with all of the different Democratic constituencies, this could be her biggest flaw.

She nodded to this (and likely other issues) in her announcement speech when she said “I’m not perfect.”

Harris will have to do much more, particularly with young progressive voters — black, white and Latino — schooled in the language of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Obama had to give a big race speech when he ran. Clinton had to give one on her approach to crime, and was called to account for racially charged comments from the 1990s.

Similarly, Harris will likely have to do the same in juxtaposing her law-and-order record with her progressive persona.

At a book event in San Francisco earlier this month a young woman interrupted Harris, yelling this: “What about black people? What about us? What about black people, Kamala!”

The key issue for that protester, and likely many other black voters, is essentially, how black are Harris’ politics. Does her record align with what many black voters want to see from their elected officials or is it at odds.

An exchange on Twitter between two black academics, Tressie McMillan Cottom and Roxane Gay, gets at this.

“I think Kamala has a hard row to hoe with black women in a general election but maybe that’s just me,” Cottom tweeted.

Gay replied that she agreed: “I’m interested. I threw some money at her campaign. But I want to see her address her work as a prosecutor and I need to have more of a sense of how she would preside. I want to know where her depths are.”

Are you a winner? For Democratic voters, that’s first and foremost in people’s minds.

Check out this quote from a South Carolina Democratic state senator: “There’s a sense of pragmatism I have not seen within the Democratic electorate in a long time,” Dick Harpootlian said. “Their No. 1 goal is not to elect a black, not to elect a woman, not to elect a specific demographic … There’s this desperation to win.”

What’s more pragmatic (moderate, suburban) than a Democratic attorney general in a blue suit and pearls? At some point, the field will be sliced and diced into progressive and establishment Democrats, the new generation and the older generation.

In some ways, it’s hard to put Harris in box — this, of course, is by design.

Sure, she lit up progressive Twitter with her aggressive questioning of Brett Kavanaugh and Jeff Sessions and she has been out front on immigration and climate change. She also touted Medicare-for-all. But, in presentation, she is no nonsense and business-like, which suggests she she can roll with the so-called adults, such as Joe Biden, as much as she is in the progressive lane.

It’s a neat trick.
